Some tutors prefer to travel to the student's home, others expect the student to go to them. The way the system works is that you contact the tutor via email who will then contact you to discuss your needs. You should then determine whether or not you wish to employ the tutor. It should of course be possible to meet the tutor in person before making arrangements but most parents/students arrange an initial session and confirm the suitability of the tutor then. You arrange with the tutor details such as where and when the tutoring will take place, as well as agreeing the fee with the tutor. Please bear in mind that all the usual common sense rules should apply when entrusting minors into the care of adults.

Who needs a private tutor, and why?

You are already paying for an education, either in taxes or direct to a private school, so why pay more? The obvious benefits are; (a) one-to-one tuition, every minute of each hour is used effectively, and (b) the content and structure of each session can be tailored to an individual student's needs. A relatively small outlay can result in tremendous progress.

A tutor can be used for:   

Preparation for specific forthcoming examinations (usually short term).

Improving knowledge and understanding in specific subjects (usually long term).

Remedial work, where a student needs to catch up due to absence (due to illness for example).

Specialized work with Home-schooled children.

I need a tutor, what do I do next?

You need check whether we have any tutors in your area using the searchable database. If there is a suitable tutor available in your area then you need to contact them by email, with details of the subject, the level to which it is being studied, your telephone number and your approximate location. The tutor will then contact you to discuss your needs. You should then determine whether or not you wish to employ the tutor. It should of course be possible to meet the tutor in person before making arrangements but most parents/students arrange an initial session and confirm the suitability of the tutor at that time. You arrange with the tutor details such as where and when the tutoring will take place.  Some tutors prefer to teach in their own homes, others prefer to teach in the students home. 

Please bear in mind that all the usual common sense rules should apply when entrusting minors into the care of adults. 

You agree the fee directly with the tutor, the size of the fee will vary but expect to pay in the region of $20-$40 per hour for an experienced teacher. Some of our tutors have supplied information relating to the range of fees charged, which can be found in their individual entries.
